What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common, chronic skin disease. An estimated 16 million Americans, about 10% of people between the ages of 40 and 65, suffer from this skin condition. Most people are unaware of the disease and its potentially serious implications, not to mention the fact that it can be easily treated.
Also referred to as "adult acne," rosacea causes facial swelling and redness and therefore, is easy to confuse with other skin conditions, such as acne or sunburn. The flushing occurs when increased amounts of blood flows through vessels at a fast rate and the vessels expand to accommodate the flow. The redness might become more noticeable and persistent as the disease progresses. Some people notice that their facial skin becomes increasingly dry.
Rosacea tends to worsen over time and if left untreated it may result in permanent facial damage not to mention serious social and psychological effects. While there is no known cause or cure for this condition, it can be effectively treated with prescription therapy, proper skin care and some lifestyle changes.
The cause of this disease is unknown. Researchers think that heredity and the environment might play roles in the development of rosacea.

What are the symptoms of Rosacea?

Look for the following signs:

  • Your face has the appearance of a sunburn that won''t go away?
  • Your face is red and blotchy when you step out of a hot shower, or after you exercise?
  • Your face suddenly turns red after a glass of red wine or spicy food?
  • You have small, dilated blood vessels on your face?
  • Your eyes feel gritty feeling or appear bloodshot, even after a good night''s sleep?

Should I visit a doctor or dermatologist?

If you believe that you may have Rosacea, the first thing to do is to see your dermatologist. Many of the symptoms of Rosacea could be the result of other ailments. As always when dealing with this sort of situation, professional advice should be your first course of action.
Although at first instance you may consider your condition to be "minor", rosacea is a skin problem that won''t go away on its own. If untreated rosacea can result in uncomfortable stinging and burning, unsightly pimples and, ultimately, a bulbous nose (rhinophyma).
Most dermatologists consider that early treatment will prevent the worsening of rosacea and the formation of telangiectasia (tiny red blood vessels).

Can Rosacea be cured?

There is no cure for rosacea at present however it can be treated. Treatments may stop progression of the disease and, in some cases, reverse its effects. Without early detection and effective treatment, rosacea can cause permanent damage and facial disfigurement. The good news, is that more than 80% of rosacea patients have their rosacea under control with treatment.

Can Rosacea be treated?

Without question, yes. Treatment of this condition can lessen (and get rid of) Rosacea symptoms. By treating this condition you can keep Rosacea from getting worse and prevent blood vessels from enlarging or rhinophyma from developing.

Rosacea skin care regimen

To properly care for your skin, follow this daily four-step, skin-care regimen:

Cleanse Skin Cleansing should remove dirt without upsetting your skin''s protective layers or natural pH balance. Everyday soaps and cleansers are often harsh, causing dryness and irritation. Because Rosacea-prone skin can be easily irritated, it is important to cleanse with a non-irritating, soap-free, oil-free and fragrance-free, gentle skin cleanser. Use as small an amount of cleanser as possible and apply it gently with your fingers. Rinse with plenty of lukewarm water and blot with a soft towel.

Exfoliate Gentle exfoliation reactivates the skin cells and accelerates cell renewal. As a result, it clears Rosacea lesions and improves the condition of your skin, uncovering a smoother, brighter, firmer-looking complexion. Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Medicate There is no substitute for medical treatment in the effective management of Rosacea. Once diagnosed, carefully follow your prescribed treatment. Apply your prescription medication in a thin layer across the affected areas only and allow it to dry before applying moisturizer, makeup or sunscreen. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Often you will need to experiment with several sunscreens before finding the one that suits you. Apply your sunscreen often and liberally to all exposed areas when outdoors, whether during the summer or winter. Consult your pharmacist for additional information on sunscreens.

Moisturize Rosacea and other skin conditions noted for dryness can upset your facial skin''s normal protective barrier. To help restore moisture without causing irritation, apply a long-lasting water-based moisturizer in a cream or lotion formulation. Make sure you choose a product that does not contain fragrances or lanolin.
Maintain You can help maintain your skin''s normal healthy state by cleansing and moisturizing your face once in the morning and again before bedtime.

What else can I do to manage Rosacea?

Be cautious with the use of soaps, shaving creams and aftershave products as they may irritate your sensitive skin. Avoid products that contain aggressive acids and alcohol, as these aggravate your skin condition.

Avoid Rosacea "triggers" such as:

  • Exposure to the sun, extreme heat, cold or wind
  • Consumption of hot liquids, spicy foods or alcohol (especially red wine)
  • Stress, or anything that elevates blood pressure or causes flushing or blushing.
  • Strenuous exercise
